Northside greenway in the works

Northside Greenway option 2.

We’ve all been waiting for this. The early design concepts for the Northside Greenway, running along Irving and Humboldt from 44th Ave N to Van White Memorial Blvd, have been officially posted. Check out the project engagement website at, MinneapolisMN.gov/northsidegreenway, to review the designs and be sure to share your comments.

Keep in mind a neighborhood greenway design has not been decided. Community engagement and local conditions will shape what the project will look like. Early Northside Greenway planning efforts resulted in three greenway examples. Different designs may be used for different portions of the project route. The design on an individual block will be based on engagement and local conditions.

Option 1: Traffic calmed street. A traffic calmed street example involves installing traffic calming and other safety improvements. Traffic calming could include traffic circles or speed humps. Safety improvements would make it easier to cross busy streets and bicycle.

Option 2 (pictured) : On-street or sidewalk-level trail. This example would include a trail. It may make the street one-way for car traffic and include on-street parking on one side. This option makes biking and walking more attractive. It also could include traffic calming with speed humps and may create more green space.

Option 3: Full greenway. A full greenway example turns the street into a linear green area with a trail. This could include play facilities, benches, or public art. A full greenway option would only be implemented on a block after substantial engagement. An example of this is 37th Ave N between Logan Ave N and Oliver Ave N.

Just a little background: Since 2011, Northside residents and the City have explored a neighborhood greenway. The project was to connect parks, schools, local businesses and other community destinations, and include improvements for biking, walking, traffic calming, recreation and green space.

The public engagement phase is expected to go thru early 2026. Construction? Who knows.
