It’s that time of year when the sun sits high in the sky and the plants grow to reach her warmth. Gardens that were green in the spring are now full of color. Red tomatoes, orange peppers, white chamomile, black and red raspberries, wine-colored gooseberries, rainbow colored chard and purple kale. The pollinator boulevard is rich with the colors of the rainbow drawing in butterflies and bees to drink and sleep. Mid-summer in the garden is my favorite time.
In years past, July has often been the month when we slow down in the Story Garden because the heat and vacations keep us away. This summer however, we can’t seem to stay away. The work, the community events, and the hang-out’s seem to be sustaining us. Rooting us in what truly matters.
It has been such a joy to meet so many new neighbors at the garden this year. I believe the extra time in the garden is creating much more opportunity to connect. More folks are stopping to talk, to explore and to harvest than ever before. It’s summers like these that I realize the garden is exactly what we need.
