City honored for youth safety

Minneapolis is one of two communities in the country to receive the 2025 Vision Zero for Youth U.S. Leadership Award from the National Center for Safe Routes to School.

This national honor recognizes cities, counties and tribal governments working to eliminate serious injuries and deaths among children walking and biking.

Minneapolis stood out for its focus on youth transportation safety through: Strong partnerships between Minneapolis Public Works, Minneapolis Health Department, Minneapolis Public Schools and community organizations; lowering the speed limit to 20 mph on local neighborhood streets; adding traffic safety improvements around schools; offering universal bicycle safety education for fourth and fifth grade students; piloting speed safety cameras near schools; and engaging youth to help shape transportation policies and street designs
